Submission Process

Q: How long is the review process after I submit a manuscript to Permuted Press?

A: Usually within 48 hours after you submit a manuscript to us, you will receive an email that acknowledges receipt of your submission.

Due to fluctuations in submissions, time lines for review could vary. You should receive a response from us within 120 days. After 120 days, you are invited to send us a follow-up email inquiring about the status of your manuscript's review.

Q: What is the submission review process?

A: Once we receive your submission, it will enter our review process. Permuted Press will evaluate the entertainment and literary qualities of your work. Once our review process is complete we will either 1) offer you a publication contract, 2) decline to publish the work, or 3) request that certain changes be made and the work resubmitted.

Q: Will I receive any feedback or critique information?

A: It is Permuted's decision to share, or not share, any feedback or critique information from our review process. If we share any critiques, please remember that it is only designed to help you and you should never take criticism personally. We are not rejecting you as a person. Only by understanding how and where you might improve your writing skills and polish your story will you learn to be a successful writer.

If no feedback or critique information is given, then it is usually a case where we are simply not interested in your book. Again, it is not personal rejection, it is simply a business decision.

Advances and Royalties

Q: Does Permuted Press pay an advance to authors?

A: Permuted Press does not pay advances against royalties. We do pay quarterly royalties on all sales in accordance with our sample publishing contract.

Q: What royalties does Permuted Press pay?

A: Royalties are paid on every sale (with some exclusions such as discount author copies). Royalty amounts can vary depending on the edition of the book. Royalties are paid on a quarterly basis in accordance with our sample publishing contract.

Q: When are royalties paid?

A: Royalties are paid on a calendar quarterly basis in accordance with our publishing contract. Each payment is sent within 90 days of the end of each calendar quarter (Quarters end: March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31).

Books are not considered sold, and royalties will not be paid until payment is actually received by Permuted Press. For example, Ingram wholesalers pay for books they sell 120 days after the end of the month in which the books were sold. This means that if a book was sold in January, Ingram would pay Permuted Press for that book at the end of May/beginning of June. Consequently, the author would receive no royalty payment on a book sold in January until the July 31st royalty payment period. Royalties are not paid until money is actually received from resellers.

Q: Do I receive a royalty statement?

A: A Royalty Statement detailing the sales of your books will be available online.

All of the online booksellers, such as Amazon.com, Borders.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, Alibris.com, BooksAMillion.com and many more purchase copies for resale through Ingram. In addition, Baker and Taylor, the largest book wholesaler in the US acquires our books from Ingram.

A: Both Amazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com stock Ingram titles and Ingram is the distributor for for Permuted Press. There is never any guarantee that your book will appear in any bookstore, including the online ones. We make the book available through Ingram, the main distributor in the United States, so it will be easy for bookstores to order yours.

Q: Will my book be placed on bookstore shelves?

Q: How many copies does the average Permuted Press book sell?

A: How well your book sells many times is entirely up to you. Permuted Press will advertise on our website, send your book for review, and we purchase targeted advertising for your novel.

We may also market your book in eBay auctions, yahoo auctions, Amazon zStores and Marketplace, ABEBooks, Fictionwise, eBookAds, Half.com, and many other avenues of sales opportunities. You, the author, can do much to promote your book too. Become visible, tell everyone about your book, talk on the radio, organize book signings, send copies for review, or let us know about review sites--whatever promotion you can do will help with your book sales. People won't buy your book if they don't know it exists. The author should definitely have a web site promoting their books.

If you would like to get some ideas on how to market/promote your book we highly recommend 1001 Ways to Market Your Books by John Kremer.

Q: Will I be expected to promote and advertise my book?

A: Yes, you will be expected to actively promote and advertise your book (see above).

This is your book, and no one knows it better than you, or where the best place to market it will be. Permuted Press is also very aggressive at marketing, and we make a commitment to our authors to work with them and help promote their books. This includes aggressive Internet promotion, as well as exposure through other media. We also offer you the opportunity to have additional review copies sent (beyond what we send) at our cost plus shipping to help in your promotion. You, as the author, have a lot to do with the promotion of your book.

Once your book is published, you need to blow your own horn. Tell everyone you know. Don't be shy ... spread the word. The more people that know about your book, and read your book, the more friends they will tell about it if they like it. Get the word out!

If you would like to get some ideas on how to market/promote your book we highly recommend 1001 Ways to Market Your Books by John Kremer.

Release Dates and Cover Pricing

Q: How much is the retail price of my book?

A: Permuted Press will set the retail price of your book to be competitive with other books in your genre, and the price is dependent on the book size, page count, and story content.

We go by a strict formula designed to make the book as inexpesive as possible, while maintaining a proper amount to cover printing, distribution, wholesale discounts, royalties paid, and profit.

If you have a large-print book, or a limited edition, the retail prices could vary greatly.

Q: Who sets the price for my book?

A: Permuted Press sets the price for your book. It is directly related to the cost of production, size of the book, number of pages, binding, and the general market pricing for books and eBooks. We go by a strict formula.

Copyrights and Legal Issues

Q: Once I've published my book with Permuted Press, who owns the rights?

A: You own the book rights. However, during the contract period, you have licensed your sales rights exclusively to us and you do not have the right to sell your book unless specifically permitted by Permuted Press.

As part of the publishing contract you grant Permuted Press the right to print, distribute, promote, and sell your book for a specific length of time, which can be extended for as long as you want.

Q: Does Permuted Press copyright my book for me?

A: When you wrote your book, you automatically asserted copyright ownership. Registering with the US Congress Copyright Office, which records this ownership more formally, gives you better recourse in case of an infringement question.

It is the author’s responsibility to apply for the copyright of their book.

Registering your book with the US Copyright Office involves providing a fee (currently $30.00 USD) and requires you to supply two (2) copies of the best edition of your book to them. The copyright certificate will be in your name and will be sent to you.

Q: Will my book have an ISBN number?

A: Permuted Press will purchase an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) specifically for each edition of your book. An ISBN is required by all book sales channels and bookstores to track and order your books.

Q: Can I still publish my book elsewhere?

A: No. You are granting the exclusive world-wide rights for Permuted Press to print, distribute, and sell your books for you. Any other printing or publication normally works to your detriment since it would have to have a different ISBN number (coming from a different publisher) and can get confusing for bookstores trying to find your book through Books-in-Print.

After the initial publishing contract ends, you may continue with Permuted Press on a quarter-to-quarter basis until you decide to publish somewhere else.

Termination of contract is outlined in the sample publishing contract.

Q: What would happen if an agent or editor saw my book and wanted to publish it?

A: Once the initial period of your publishing contract ends, you are free to enter into any other agreements at any time.

However, other publishers may ask you to sever your agreement with Permuted Press and grant them exclusive rights. If done within the initial period of the publishing contract, other publishers may offer a quick claim buy-out to Permuted Press to receive the rights to your work. Permuted Press will consider any such offer and always strives to achieve the maximum benefit for our authors.

With each book we publish, Permuted Press spends a considerable amount of time and money getting it into print, commissioning cover artwork, and getting your book into the sales system and book catalogs. A fair return on our investment is what helps Permuted Press to stay in business.
